Break the chains for yourself and for everyone

Our ancestors fought for the freedom we enjoy today. But what do we do with that freedom? When will we, with all due respect, truly respect and accept each other? Let me tell you: we're already well on our way. We collaborate, share recipes, stories, and increasingly, each other's cultures. The similarities between our ethnicities are impressive. That's why today's slogan is:

"You came to do it differently":

  • Instead of focusing on what's not going well yet, I want to reflect on what is . Mutual respect is growing. Love for our roots is growing. And spiritual awareness among Afro-Surinamese people is growing stronger. That's wonderful. Because besides healing generational pain, growth is more important than ever.

  • I also see the strength of Afro-Surinamese people who embrace other religions. That deserves respect. You choose what suits your path. And as long as your intentions are pure, you can never go wrong. I myself keep the legacy of my ancestors alive—because it gives me strength and direction.

Emancipation Day

Broko a keti

It's almost time for Keti Koti again. Break the chains !

A day on which we commemorate the abolition of slavery. A day that, if possible, you should take a day off. Not just as a Surinamese, but as everyone who honors freedom. The islands also have their own history and names for emancipation, and it's important that they feel represented in this commemoration.
